Susanna

How about this? In the late Seventies I was just learning to channel. I had been fortunate enough to bring in St. Germain in an early attempt, and he had been nice enough to stick around and become my teacher. While at work I would often get the urge to write something other than the usual stuff I did there, so I would pull out a note pad I kept for that purpose and jot down whatever came to mind. It would usually be a bit of knowledge I hadn't had before--something the Count, as I fondly called him then, wanted me to pay attention to. On one of these occasions I wrote the following. "You were a singer in Handel's time, one of his sopranos. He even composed some things especially for you. Read about Handel and learn who you were."

Well, I was singing a lot at that time, including works by Handel. He was and is one of my favorite composers, and I knew a lot of his music but little about his life. I remembered a vivid dream I had had not too long before, where I saw him in full color in magnificent 18th Century clothing, and got the feeling that I was one of his "favorites". But favorite what? The dream didn't say. Fascinated by the whole thing, I managed to find a book about him, and set out to see what this was leading up to.

I don't have the book here, and don't remember many details, but Handel did put on many of his own oratorios and operas, and had a coterie of singers he regularly used in them. Fiery and temperamental all, they were. You might say he had his hands full just keeping them in line, especially the Italians. But one of them was a rather mousy little English girl named Susanna Arne. Her voice was far from powerful, and her range was short for a soprano, but she sang with such feeling that it was said her rendition of his arias brought tears to the eyes of grown men. She was easy to handle too (no pun intended), and was indeed one of Handel's "favorites". And he did write several pieces especially for her. In addition, they became friends and he spent much time at her home in later life.

Left that way, you'd say, "But where's the connection? What makes you think that was you, or whatever it is you think?"

Well, here are a few clues: Susanna was the sister of Thomas Arne, composer of "Rule, Brittania" and lots of other things. By itself that doesn't mean much, but along with the information that Thomas bore an amazing physical resemblance to my then husband, Ronald Russell, and that their musical tastes, abilities, and personalities ran parallel could not be dismissed.* But that's Ron and Tom, whatever their connection...so on to Susanna and me.

She was what they called a "short" soprano, that is, the voice quality was that of a soprano, but the range was more in the contralto register. This is rare, I had never heard of it--except in my own case. Those high notes that anyone with a light voice like mine could manage easily were elusive, at times impossible for me. Ron kept at me constantly to sing contralto, and wouldn't listen to my valid complaints that my voice just wasn't heavy enough for that. Later, when I had found a biography of Susanna, I learned that Thomas had also berated his sister for not singing in the lower register, claiming that she was really a contralto, light voice or not.

There were other similarities--many, actually--that tied me to this person. There was a physical resemblance. Many aspects of our personalities matched. In later life she became a rather celebrated actress. I didn't of course, but I had always been drawn to that profession, and if I had been encouraged along that line I would have. In any case, there was enough evidence there that if I could believe in reincarnation I would have to believe that I was Susanna in a former life.

If I could believe in reincarnation or anything...I'm a skeptic, remember?

*Why was I not surprised when Ronald, a long-time Anglophile, eventually went "home" to England and became a British subject? Rule, Brittania!
