The house my husband and I are living in presently was built in the late 1800's, around 1890. We moved into the house when my children were very young. My husband's job involved some traveling and I stayed home alone with the children. On his first trip out of town after we moved, I was watching TV. The children were in bed and asleep. The dog and cats were sleeping in the front room near me. Suddenly the dogs woke up and hid behind my chair, then I thought I heard some noise in the kitchen. I walked into the dark kitchen to see if one of the kids woke up for some reason.
An old woman was standing in front of my kitchen table. She had gray hair pulled back into a bun. She was wearing , what my mother called, a house dress. I was not afraid, but surprised. "I am glad you are living here", she said. I reached for the lights and she was gone.
I was left with a warm comfortable feeling, almost like coming home after a long time away. I do not know why she needed to tell me, she was glad and she never came back.
